There will be a revolution in our future public transportation methods.

Over the next few years, the way we move from point A to point B will change dramatically. There has been a strong shift of attention into the public transportation issues. Leaders like Thilo Koslowski, who studies next-generation transportation methods, the lead automotive analyst at research firm Gartner, the future looks very bright. Big car companies like Tesla, Ford, BMW, Cadillac, and Chevy have also pledged to help with this revolution. BMW plans to be able to mass produce electric cars by 2020 and offer 12 different models by 2025. Traditional carmakers are already seeking to gain share in a market dominated by U.S. upstart Tesla. Moreover, this friendly competition is very good for us, the consumer, because it sets a quality standard in new electric cars. So the million dollar question is; What should we expect in the next 3 to 5 years in our transportation systems?

1. Hyperloop

This method of transportation rises above around ground on nearly airless tubes at 800 mph. The “out of the world train” will transport you from LA to San Francisco in just 30 minutes. Elon Musk announced a design scheme back in 2012, but we have now learned that the concept is more than a pipe dream, it is now a real technology in development. Some experts are skeptical, saying that the proposals ignore the expenses and risks of developing the technology and call it “completely impractical”. Claims have also been made that the Hyperloop is too susceptible to disruption from a power outage.

2. Autonomous Cars

The most notable “self-driving” car in the market right now is Google’s project; now called Waymo. Waymo stands for a new way forward in mobility. They are are a “self-driving technology company with a mission to make it safe and easy for people and things to move around”. They claim that they have driven more than 25,000 autonomous miles each week, largely on complex city streets. Plus the1 billion simulated miles drove just in 2016. Uber has also shown interest in producing autonomous cars and trucks a reality. This is big news not only for the general public but also for car companies around the world. For those big name car brands that decide not adapt to this technology, it might be a hard uphill battle.

3. Transportation Pods

Finally, transportation pods. The Chevy pod above seat two people and move on their own over a pre-described route. The idea is that the human operator interacts with the pod using a touchscreen in the windshield. You swipe to select a destination, and you can read the daily news, check your e-mail or even play a video game during the trip. There will be a built-in wireless hotspot to connect your gadgets. The pod operates on its own, showing its current route. This idea is similar to the pods are already being used in Masdar City in Abu Dhabi. These pods will mainly be used in highly controlled areas.

All in all, the future of transportation is one that we should all be very excited about. New and interesting concepts are being developed every day. The ultimate goal is to create a method of transportation that is safe, efficient, eco-friendly, and affordable.
